Re: (VU-Study-Corner) what is UMC ?

In 1964, the Department of Mathematical Machine Construction of the Warsaw Polytechnic Institute built the general-purpose UMC-10 to solve computational problems in various fields of science and technology. The very simple internal organization of the computer together with horizontal microprogramming makes it possible to apply it to the control of different sorts of technological processes. It is a regular single-address, fixed point (floating program point), micro program, synchronic (fundamental frequency 200 kHz) computer with a minus-binary numerical system with two sorts of memories (ferrite ready-access and standby on magnetic drum) and is capable of 3000 additions a second. This paper is organized as follows: introduction; computer construction (basic units, ready-access memory, standby memory, input-output devices, and assembly); internal organization of the UMC-10 computer (minus-binary system, word, whole and fractional numbers, micro-operations, coding, and coded micro-operations); logic circuit and computer cycle of operation; and programming (technical data and general principles of W-20 coding, arithmetic and logic transmission instructions, first letter of operational part, next letters of operational part, and control subroutines).
